About Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi

The Early Years & Freedom Struggle

Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi was born on March 21, 1923, in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh, India, into a Christian family of noble descent. Her parents played a key role in India's liberation movement.

As a child, she spent time with Mahatma Gandhi at his ashram. Gandhi recognized her extraordinary spiritual wisdom even at a young age.

The Discovery of Sahaj Yoga (1970)

On May 5, 1970, while meditating on a beach in Nargol, Gujarat, Shri Mataji experienced the opening of the Sahasrara (the seventh chakra). This monumental event made it possible for humanity to achieve Self-Realization en masse, a process previously available only to a few dedicated seekers after years of penance.

A Global Spiritual Movement

Unlike other modern spiritual teachers, Shri Mataji insisted that Self-Realization is a living process, and therefore, it cannot be paid for. She traveled across the globe completely free of charge, spreading the message of peace and awakening the Kundalini energy in hundreds of thousands of people.
